Verifone Implementing New Conexxus Mobile Payment Standard

Tech firm worked closely with key early adopters

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Payments company Verifone has come together with mobile technology providers, point-of-sale (POS) manufacturers and fuel marketers at Conexxus to develop a new Mobile API standard.

This new standard creates more consumer-centric mobile commerce environments in gas stations and convenience stores and at the pump by allowing tightly coordinated interaction between mobile payment and loyalty applications.

“Verifone has consistently and heavily engaged in Conexxus’ work and has been instrumental in accelerating Mobile API standard adoption across our membership. This is a unique example of how the manufacturing, service provider and retail communities came together within Conexxus to develop a critical industry standard,” said Gray Taylor, executive director of Alexandria, Va.-based Conexxus.

Verifone worked closely with five key early adopters of mobile payments to define a standard interface resulting in an open API that all mobile-payment providers and POS manufactures can implement. By taking a collaborative approach to developing the new Conexxus Mobile Payment Standard, Verifone prevented the project from resulting in a proprietary interface, it said. Verifone and its partners are now deploying open mobile-payment solutions across a variety of applications, including retailer-branded apps and direct automated clearing house (ACH) payment at the pump with community banks.

“We are dedicated to providing merchants with innovative ways to better their business and enrich the customer experience,” said Dan Yienger, senior vice president and general manager of Verifone’s global petroleum business. “Further proliferation of closed solutions would have added significant technology complexity and support costs for retailers, making it difficult for them to select and deploy mobile solutions that best suit their needs. Verifone’s commitment to simplifying and enabling commerce is why we collaborated with our peers and Conexxus to set Mobile API standards for the industry as a whole.”

San Jose, Calif.-based Verifone has been actively involved in driving the next phase of the Conexxus Mobile Standard, Mobile 2.0, which incorporates loyalty and mobile payments in the mobile commerce environment. The addition of loyalty to the mobile payment process increases the consumer value proposition and enables mobility payment providers to deliver highly customized and relevant offers that consumers are much more likely to redeem, the company said.
