Verifone: 'Simplifying' EMV, Mobile Payment

POS firm leverages Revel and Samsung infrastructure to expand mobile ‘ubiquity’

LAS VEGAS -- In two separate partnership announcements, point-of-sale (POS) and payments-solution provider Verifone has integrated with an iPad POS firm and a major smartphone manufacturer to inch the retail channel toward mobile-payment “ubiquity,” according to the company.

Making its announcements this week at the Electronic Transactions Association’s Transact 16 show in Las Vegas, officials said its Verifone Point Classic solution is now integrated with Revel Systems’ iPad POS, “simplifying” merchant acceptance of Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) and payment management.

In a separate move, the San Jose, Calif.-based Verifone announced that it has partnered with Samsung to tie into the phone maker’s mobile-payment feature, opening up Verifone’s retail payment network to the Seoul, South Korea-based manufacturers’ phones.

Known in the c-store channel for its hardware and software POS solutions, Verifone operates in a number of verticals and payment environments, from quick-service restaurants to taxis, according to Andy Payment, head of global communications for Verifone.

“We provide technology … for that last inch of commerce between the merchant and consumer,” Payment told CSP Daily News. Beyond POS, “we can deliver our [device] footprint and our expertise in secure payment.”

Its partnership efforts tie back to a larger goal of making mobile payment a universal option, what Payment refers to as “ubiquity.” He said more and more merchants want to offer what he calls the “Amazon experience,” or the ability to not only purchase items online or with a phone, but “incorporate things like relevant offers, loyalty, card-linked rewards and targeted advertising through to that last inch where consumers are buying stuff and making the transaction.”

With the Revel integration, the San Francisco-based iPad POS provider can offer clients access to mobile wallets and loyalty programs, while reducing Payment Card Industry scope and eliminating the need for recertification as requirements change, Payment said.

“Revel is a platform designed to offer clients a seamless customer experience, and having a payment component that will simplify our clients’ lives is important to us,” said Lisa Falzone, co-founder and CEO of Revel. “Verifone has more than 30 years of payments expertise and a worldwide team of payments specialists that will provide our clients with the most secure and technologically advanced payments capabilities.”

The Samsung partnership advances mobile payment using Samsung devices, Payment said, with Verifone’s network being able to connect with Samsung technologies.

“Many merchants are surprised and delighted to see their existing Verifone terminals already working with Samsung Pay,” said Will Graylin, global co-general manager of Samsung Pay.  “This partnership shows that Verifone and Samsung are committed to bringing better commerce experiences to the point of sale for merchants and consumers; and a fast path to acceptance is the first step in the journey.”

The Washington-based Electronic Transactions Association (ETA) is a payment technology group that sponsors the Transact conference, which brought an estimated 4,000 attendees to Las Vegas this past week. ETA represents more than 500 payments and technology companies that process more than $5 trillion in purchases in the United States and deploy payments technologies to merchants and consumers.
