All Family Fare convenience stores are operated by franchisees throughout central and eastern North Carolina. All locations sell fuel, mostly under the BP banner. There are some Shell stations and some with private-branded Family Fare fuel.

In 2014, the company remodeled 17 stores with fresh paint, gondolas and LED lights. Most of the stores are located in blue-collar and family neighborhoods and stock according to their customers’ needs.

Competitors include Kangaroo Express and Circle K. Some stores are open 24 hours a day for customer convenience.

Family Fare is a member and sponsor of DiversityFran. First-time Family Fare franchisees who qualify as diverse candidates may receive a discount of 20% off the initial franchise fee. The company also is a member and sponsor of VetFran. First-time Family Fare franchisees who provide documentation of an honorable discharge from the U.S. military may also receive a discount of 20% off the initial franchise fee.

All food items in the stores are self-serve. Stores also offer private-label coffee, including cappuccino, and baskets of fresh produce. The company plans to increase its selection of frozen dispensed drinks. All stores sell lottery tickets, gift cards and prepaid phone cards. All have ATMs. About 15 stores have a car wash.
