In business for more than 50 years, family-owned Johnson Oil Co. runs a total of 89 locations—84 stores and five truckstops—in northwestern Illinois and southeastern Iowa. The company also distributes Shell gasoline to 15 dealers.

In early 2011, Johnson Oil reached a sales agreement with Carlson Oil Co. that included Carlson's BP contract, dealer contracts and five convenience stores in Illinois. The transaction added the BP brand to Johnson Oil’s longtime Shell brand affiliation and expanded its marketplace from southeastern Iowa all the way to the far western suburbs of Chicago.

From 2011 to 2013, the chain grew by 11 company-owned stores and began distributing fuel to dealers.

The Rock Falls, Ill.-based company has won awards from Shell and Motiva as a top-selling fuel wholesaler.

Foodservice offerings vary widely, depending on the size of the store or truckstop. Four locations have Subway and one offers Hot Stuff Pizza.Most locations sell beer.
