Stewart's Shops Corp.

With a history in dairy farming going back to 1917 and an equally rich legacy as a purveyor of ice cream, Stewart's Shops is an employee- and family-owned convenience store chain based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. It is known regionally for its milk, ice cream, coffee, food to go, gasoline and other convenience items. The company has an extensive production, distribution and warehousing network that supplies its stores. As a result, the chain is unique in the number of products it produces in its own facilities, including 20-ounce "refresher" teas and dairy drinks such as eggnog, along with ice cream and milk, baked goods, breads, soups and chili. Stewart's Shops vary in size and layout, depending on when the shop was built or rebuilt, but all carry Stewart's private-label products and offer an ice-cream counter. Because they offer unique dairy drinks and baked goods, most shops frequently offer samples near the checkouts. The company contracts with more than 30 farms in New York. In terms of fuel retailing, Stewart's Shops offer fuel at 274 locations, with one having a car wash. Stewart's is one-third employee-owned and two-thirds family-owned.
