The Toot'n Totum story began in 1950 when Eldon "Lefty" and Novie Mitchell established their first convenience store. Novie's son, Greg, now serves as the chain's owner and president.

More than a third of the stores are open 24 hours a day, and there are drive-thrus at 15 locations. The chain also operates Mr. Payroll, including one standalone location and nine inside c-stores.

Thirty of the stores fly the Valero gasoline flag, while 24 sell Shell fuel. Eight locations sell ConocoPhillips brand, and the rest sell unbranded or TnT fuel.

The Amarillo, Texas-based company has historically stayed within the Amarillo market, but started moving into other Panhandle communities in 2013 with the purchase of 10 Express Lane stores from Frontier Fuel Co. The stores are rebranded Toot'n Totum.

Growth has come through acquisition over the years. Toot'n Totum acquired seven Anderson Dairy Stores in 1966, 12 Jiffy Food Stores in 1969, four Circle K's in 1985, 15 7-Elevens in 1988, 11 Diamond Shamrocks in 1995 and 10 Phillips66 stores in 2004.
