Mega Co-Op Purchases 5 Travel Stops

Grocer-turned-convenience retailer expands in Wisconsin

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Mega Co-Op has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase five Travel Stop locations from Dan and Phyllis Acker. The five stores are located in Stanley, Abbotsford, Elk Mound, Durand and New Lisbon, Wis.

The Cooperative will operate the stores as Mega Co-Op Travel Stops and will keep the branded Shell and BP fuel they offer.

“2016 has been a transformational year for the Consumers Cooperative Association of Eau Claire. Mega Co-Op is now focused solely on the convenience store business and, as such, has spent a great deal of resources this last year remodeling, rebranding and stabilizing our new business model,” said Mike Buck, CEO of the Consumers Cooperative Association of Eau Claire, parent company of Mega Co-Op.

“Our cooperative members now have 38 convenient options for fuel and food in 11 counties covering 20 cities. Additionally, the cooperative continues to create quality jobs in each community and now employs more than 300 team members that work hard to serve our cooperative members' needs,” he said.

In January, Mega Co-Op reached an agreement with Gordy’s Market that will allow each company to focus on its primary business through an asset swap.

Under the agreement, three Mega Co-Op grocery stores became Gordy’s Markets and all 14 Gordy’s Express convenience stores and gas stations became Mega Holiday c-stores and gas stations.

When they completed the transaction, Gordy’s owned and operated 24 grocery stores but no c-stores or gas stations, and Mega Co-op owned and operated a total of 33 c-stores and gas stations but no grocery stores.

The Consumers Cooperative Association of Eau Claire was founded in 1935 and operates 38 convenience stores in west central Wisconsin. It employs approximately 300 team members serving more than 70,000 cooperative members.
