The month's roundup of new convenience store openings and more

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- This edition of the Open & Shut digest of new convenience store openings, sales, acquisitions and store closings features listings for the month of August 2014.

Kwik Trip Open & Shut (CSP Daily News / Convenience Stores / Gas Station)

Many of the stores are owned by independent operators, while others belong to major chains, some part of CSP's Convenience Top 101.

The unscientific, monthly "snapshot" of newly opened or closed U.S. convenience stores, gas station, truckstops and travel centers not previously reported in CSP Daily News has been arranged by state. Click through each item for more details on each store.

California

The 2,743-square-foot ARCO ampm gas station at Otay Mesa in San Diego, Calif., has been sold for $2.15 million.

Colorado

Kum & Go LC opened a convenience store in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Aug. 21.

Florida

Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened travel stops in Fort Myers, Fla., on August 14 at I-75, Exit 143 and Mossy Head, Fla., on August 28 at I-10, Exit 70. The Fort Myers location features Wendy's and Subway restaurants and more. The Mossy Head location features Subway and McDonald's restaurants and more.

Georgia

Metro Market opened a convenience store in Augusta, Ga., on August 22.

QuikTrip opened a convenience store in Norcross, Ga, on August 28.

Hawaii

The Kahala Shell gas station and convenience store in East Honolulu, leased to Aloha Petroleum by Kamehameha Schools, will be run by a new operator. Current owner/operator Madeleine Snow retired on August 31 following the end of her current lease term. As of August 1, the location discontinued oil changes and auto repairs. Aloha will continue to operate the station under the Shell brand. The station is scheduled to be razed and rebuilt.

Illinois

Jitu Hingu opened a Quick Pick convenience store in Mundelein, Ill., on Aug. 29 in the former Pk's Pantry location.

The Boulder Group, a net leased investment brokerage firm, has completed the sale of a single-tenant 7-Eleven property in Skokie, Ill., for $960,000.

Buchanan Energy has opened a new Bucky's gas station and convenience store in Buffalo Grove, Ill.

Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a travel stop in Angola, Ind., on August 21 at I-69, Exit 348. It features a Hardee's restaurant and more.

Iowa

Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a travel stop in Shelby, Iowa, on August 14 at I-80, Exit 34. It features Chester's Chicken and McDonald's restaurants and more.

Kwik Trip Inc. opened a convenience store in Davenport, Iowa, on August 22.

Kansas

QuikTrip opened a convenience store in Wichita, Kansas, on August 28.

Kentucky

Newcomb Oil opened a FiveStar Food Mart in Russellville, Ky., on August 26, on the site of a former Swifty gas station.

Maryland

On August 5, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and Areas USA opened the $26 million Chesapeake House Travel Plaza along I-95 in Cecil County, six weeks ahead of schedule. Amenities include The Market Place one-stop shop, Peet's Coffee & Tea, Sunoco fuel station, A Plus convenience store and restrooms, Earl of Sandwich, Pizza Hut, KFC, Wendy's and Auntie Anne's.

Massachusetts

In mid-August, Nidal Elfakih opened Four Seasons Grocery & Deli in Worcester, Mass.

Minnesota

Kwik Trip Inc. opened a convenience store in Norwood Young America, Minn., on August 7.

Mississippi

Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a travel stop in Indianola, Miss., on August 21 at U.S. Highways 82 and 49. It features a Hardee's restaurant and more.

New Jersey

QuickChek opened a convenience store and gas station in Eatontown, N.J., on August 12, replacing the former Sands Motor Lodge.

New York

Stewart's Shops opened a replacement shop in Troy, N.Y., on August 20. Demolition of the old shop will begin soon and construction of a new gas island will follow. It also opened a replacement shop in Cropseyville, N.Y., on August 27. Demolition of the old shop will begin soon. The company expects the new site to be pumping gas in early October.

The Burrville (N.Y.) Cider Mill has been associated with the Steiner family for nearly two decades and, soon, a nearby convenience store will bear the family's name. Cynthia L. Steiner and her family recently purchased Fast Eddy's Kwikmart, and the business will soon be named Steiner's General Store.

North Carolina

Ben's Penny Mart, Asheville, N.C.'s newest convenience store, opened on August 15. It will  serve as a destination for Asheville's tubing population., with free tube rentals deposit.

North Dakota

Econofoods in Wahpeton, N.D., has opened Econo Express, a gas station and convenience store. It offers a rewards program tied to the grocery chain.

Ohio

Giant Eagle Inc. celebrated the grand opening of its newest GetGo convenience store in Grandview, Ohio, on August 14. The 24-hour c-store and gas station is part of the Grandview Yard complex. It also opened a GetGo c-store in Hilliard, Ohio, on August 28.

Pennsylvania

Sheetz Inc. opened a 6,000-square-foot "Super Sheetz" convenience restaurant in Ligonier Township, Pa., on August 21. The original store nearby has been closed. The new location features expanded store and food preparation space, larger restroom facilities, indoor and outdoor eating space, more pumps and diesel fuel.

South Carolina

QuikTrip opened convenience stores in Rock Hill, S.C., on August 7 and in Fort Mills, S.C., on August 28.

South Dakota

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe opened the Black Pipe C-Store in Norris, S.D., in early August, in a former church.

Tennessee

A former Exxon gas station in Brentwood, Tenn., has now reopened as a Twice Daily, part of Tri Star Energy's rebranding.

Texas

United Supermarkets LLC opened a freestanding United Express convenience store and gas station in Wichita Falls, Texas, on August 8. It also opened the company's fourth Amigos grocery store location and an adjacent United Express convenience store and gas station in Hereford, Texas, on August 20. The c-stores feature drive-thru windows.

Susser Holdings Corp. opened Stripes Convenience Stores in Gatesville, Cisco, Rosenberg and Lubbock, Texas, with grand opening fiestas and ribbon-cutting ceremonies on August 13, 15, 15 and 19, respectively.

Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a travel stop in Fort Stockton, Texas, on August 28 at I-10, Exit 261. It features a Carl's Jr. restaurant and more.

Utah

Holiday Oil Co. opened a second convenience store and gas station in Lehi, Utah, on August 14.

Virginia

Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a travel stop in Franklin, Va., on August 21 at U.S. Highways 58 and 258. It features Love's first Bojangles' quick-service restaurant and more.

Tiger Fuel opened Lake Monticello Exxon in Palmyra, Va., on August 28, offering regular-grade gasoline for $1.99 as a promotion.

West Virginia

Sheetz Inc. has opened its newest Huntington, W.Va., convenience store and gas station near Marshall University.

Wisconsin

Kwik Trip Inc. opened a Kwik Star convenience store in Grand Chute, Wis., on August 20.
