The Nacho Market Basket: The Opportunity Is on the Plate

Merchandising Super Bowl snacks doesn’t have to be hard. Just pick one dish as your inspiration. Behold the power of the nacho.
  • Approximately 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips were consumed during last year’s Super Bowl, according to the Snack Food Association. At an estimated $3.29 per 9-ounce bag, that’s a lot of corn. Want to add a flavor twist? Offer flavored tortilla chips such as cheese or a flaming-hot variety for a locos nachos experience. Approximate retail price: $3.29
  • In January 2014, Kraft warned consumers that there could be a Velveeta shortage, and the term “cheesepocalypse” was coined. Don’t let this happen to you. Stock your shelves with all the shelf-stable and fresh cheese you can. With more than 900 known cheeses in the world, this shouldn’t be a problem. Pro tip: Limburger might not taste very good with salsa. Choose wisely. Approximate retail price: $6.88
  • Spice it up. From chipotle to sriracha, jalapeño to habanero, bolder flavors are speaking to your younger adult consumers—and the hotter the better. A little jar of pickled jalapeños is the icing on the cake, especially if that cake consists of cheesy corn chips and tangy salsa. Approximate retail price: $3.78
  • Protein. Want to make your snackers believe that plate of ooey, gooey nachos is better for them? Add protein, one of the most in-demand foods among consumers trying to eat more healthfully. Consider ground beef, chicken or chorizo for an extra kick. Approximate retail price: 75 cents to $4.10
  • “Salsa is now the No. 1 condiment in America,” said George Costanza to Jerry Seinfeld in a 1992 episode of the eponymous “Seinfeld” series. “Do you know why?” said Jerry. “Because people like to say ‘Salsa!’ ” Twenty-three years later, revenue from premade salsa is expected to grow 3.1% in 2015, according to market research firm IBISWorld. Approximate retail price: $2.50
  • Guacamole eaters across the country consume 120 million pounds of avocados during the Super Bowl. That’s equal to 387,096 offensive linemen at an average of 310 pounds each. Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Phoenix and Houston are the top-five avocado-eating cities in the United States, according to the Hass Avocado Board. Approximate retail price: 50 cents to $2.
