2015: FDA Reports Due on Raising Legal Age and Public Health Knowledge

With the tobacco industry waiting for the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) to issue potential regulations on cigars, pipe tobacco and electronic products, finalize a report on the impact of the use of menthol in cigarettes, and act on pending substantial equivalency applications, the FDA’s website contains a timeline infographic with two key events to be finalized in April of 2015.

As shown on the accompanying timeline infographic from the FDA’s website, one of the events will involve the Center for Tobacco Products submitting a report to Congress by April of 2015 outlining the public health impact of raising the minimum tobacco purchase age.

Specifically, Section 104 of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act states that the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products will convene an expert panel to conduct a study on the public health implications of raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products and then submit a report to Congress on the results of the study not later than five years after the date of enactment of the Tobacco Control Act.

The other key event contained on the timeline infographic states that the Center for Tobacco Products will provide a report to Congress by April of 2015 outlining how well the public understands the health consequences of using tobacco products that contain harmful constituents. Under Section 904 of the Tobacco Control Act, this level of public knowledge will be determined through periodic consumer research regarding a list of harmful and potentially harmful constituents periodically published by the Center for Tobacco Products.
