As the coronavirus pandemic ramped up this spring, it forced operators to rethink their foodservice offer. According to an April CSP survey of its retailer audience, more than half had shut down in-store dining, and 44% had closed down their self-serve programs. This is even as c-stores—deemed an essential service—became an alternative food destination for consumers as grocers cut hours and struggled with out-of-stocks.

Nonetheless, nearly two-thirds (64%) of convenience-store customers said they had reduced their foodservice visits to c-stores during the pandemic, according to CSP’s sister research firm, Technomic, Chicago.
