Convenience-store chain Kwik Trip is closing 13 Kwik Spirits and Tobacco Outlet Plus locations.

“Alcohol and tobacco sales are down, so we made the difficult decision to close these 13 locations,” Ben Leibl, company spokesperson, told CSP.

The locations are scheduled to close by the end of August, according to WXOW, La Crosse, Wisconsin. WXOW is an ABC affiliate.

Kwik Trip in January 2022 introduced Kwik Spirits. Kwik Spirits locations feature products including wine, liquor, beer and tobacco—including humidor cigars, roll-your-own, chewing tobacco, vape products and cigarettes, according to La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip’s website.

Affected employees are being offered positions at nearby Kwik Trips, Leibl told WXOW. The move reflects a wider shift away from standalone alcohol and tobacco stores, he added.

The c-store chain will now concentrate on steering customers to its traditional stores, Leibl told WXOW.

Family-owned Kwik Trip, which is considering building a third distribution center, has 919 locations and is one of the biggest independently held c-store chains in the country. It has locations in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin under the Kwik Trip banner and stores in Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota under the Kwik Star name. Kwik Trip produces more than 80% of the products sold in its stores, supplied by its own bakery, commissary, dairy and distribution center.
