Gas station food, liquor ban lifted in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- All gas stations in San Jose, Calif., will be allowed to sell food and liquor after the City Council voted to lift a ban passed 20 years ago, reported the Associated Press.

The San Jose City Council voted eight-to-one earlier this week to repeal the restrictions despite the objections by community leaders and Police Chief Rob Davis.

The chief argued against lifting the ban because of what he termed a link to incidents of violent crime, car accidents and underage drinkers.

Operators of [image-nocss] gas stations that were not allowed to sell food and alcohol had been pushing for the new rules.

They argued in favor of ending the restrictions because they said they were at a disadvantage in trying to compete against stations built before 1985.
