3 Beverage Brands See Significant ‘Buzz’ Score Improvement

And four that are losing ground

LONDON -- A midyear update of YouGov's annual BrandIndex rankings shows the beverages with the top Buzz Rankings generally stayed the same this year as the year before, but three brands showed surprising gains in the annual YouGov BrandIndex.

Coca-Cola once again tops the list of beverage brands, with 28% of U.S. consumers saying they were Coca-Cola customers in the past 30 days, compared to 20% for Pepsi, 19% for Gatorade, 15% for Dr Pepper and 14% for AriZona Iced Tea. (See the top 10 below.)

While Pepsi's score grew 2.2 points, none of these brands were able to increase their current customer share by a statistically significant margin during this past June compared to the same month last year, according to YouGov, a research firm based in London.

The three beverage brands that made the biggest current customer gains from June 2016 to June 2017 were Canada Dry, Sunny D and 7UP, all three up 2 percentage points or more.

At 11%, Canada Dry has the 12th highest number of current customers, Sunny D comes in 23rd with 9%, and 7UP ranks 19th with more than 9%.

A few middle-of-the-pack brands—Capri Sun, Nestea and Barq’s—shed statistically significant amounts of current customers, according to the report, while the once hot SoBe Life Water lost enough to rank 74 out of the 87 brands tracked.

YouGov BrandIndex compared the current customer data for 87 major beverages for June of this year to the results from June 2016.  A current customer is defined as a person who purchased the brand in the past 30 days.
