ATLANTA -- A look at the beverage habits of today's youth bodes well for continued growth in the bottled-water category.
Water accounted for 43.7% of total beverage consumption among U.S. youth—children from ages 2 through 19—according to a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2013-2016, And the older the children got, the more water they drank.

"The contribution of water to total beverage consumption increased with age, from 39.5% to 41.9% and 47.0%, among youth aged 2-5, 6-11 and 12-19 years," respectively, the study results state. Water accounted for a smaller percentage of total beverage consumption among boys compared with girls, 41.6% and 45.9%, respectively.
Consumption of other beverage categories also grew with age, as milk and juice drinking declined.
Soft-drink consumption increased from 13.0% for the youngest children surveyed to 22.3% for the oldest group. "Other beverages," which include coffee, tea, sports and energy drinks, and more also grow with age (3.0%, 5.5%, and 11.3%).
At the same time, the contribution of milk to total beverage consumption decreased with age, from 32.1% among those ages 2-5, to 24.4% and 14.5% among those ages 6-11 and 12-19 years, respectively. The report said 100% juice followed a similar pattern, decreasing from 12.4% (2-5) to 7.3% (6-11) and 4.9% (12-19).
