RTD Coffee Gets a 'Hard' Kick

New drink blends cold brew with malt for an alcohol twist

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Here's a new one: As consumer interest in iced and cold-brew coffee has taken off in recent months, a small coffee company based in St. Paul, Minn., is putting a malt-alcohol twist on the drink.

Blackeye Roasting Co. is bringing its Bad Larry's Cold Hard Coffee to retail this summer.

The beverage will be distributed by Waite Park, Minn.-based Bernick’s throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin beginning late May and early June. It also is available at Total Wine in Arizona and Florida, with pending national distribution.

“The demand for cold-brew coffee has completely taken off,” said Matt McGinn, Bad Larry’s formulation consultant and founder of Blackeye Roasting Co., “and we’re the first to craft an alcoholic version. Bad Larry’s is nothing like coffee-flavored beers or cocktails; this is totally innovative and different.”

Bad Larry’s uses Blackeye as the source for its coffee ingredients. The cold-brew coffee is steeped for more than 16 hours and topped with nitrogen before being canned in La Crosse, Wis.

Bad Larry’s comes in 12-ounce cans sold in four-packs. The drink contains 6% alcohol by volume and 180 milligrams of caffeine.
