7-Eleven Rolls Out a New Breakfast Pizza

Technomic c-store data reveals growth opportunity in the morning for the menu item

IRVING, Texas -- Participating 7-Eleven convenience stores now have hot, ready-to-eat breakfast pizza available in whole portions or by the slice.

The new breakfast pizza features a peppered cream gravy base topped with smoked bacon, breakfast sausage, hickory-smoked ham, scrambled eggs and cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, all on top of a flaky biscuit crust.

The hot breakfast pizza is part of 7-Eleven stores' "two for $2" pizza slice offer. Whole breakfast pizzas are priced at $5.55.

"This is a hearty option for customers craving a warm breakfast in addition to their fresh-brewed cup of coffee on cold mornings," said Nancy Smith, 7-Eleven's senior vice president of fresh food and proprietary beverages. "And it's great for sharing at the office, giving co-workers another great option from the usual box of great doughnuts."

During a test of the new item at select 7-Eleven stores, the breakfast pizza became the second highest-selling pizza, according to the company.

"Since we started carrying hot pizza, it has become one of the best-selling ready-to-eat foods at 7-Eleven stores," said Dennis Phelps, 7-Eleven's vice president of fresh food and proprietary beverages. "Mornings are our busiest time of day, and adding a breakfast pizza will prove to be as popular with the a.m. crowd as our other pizzas are for lunch and dinner."

Technomic’s most recent data on c-stores reveals that pizza is the third most-frequently offered entree across dayparts, in terms of number of menu items. MenuMonitor’s menu-tracking data from Technomic also shows that on morning menus specifically, breakfast pizzas have increased items by more than 15% year over year.

The addition of new breakfast pizzas addresses the preferences of 55% of foodservice consumers who purchase breakfast from c-stores at least once a month, as well as the 42% of younger consumers ages 18 to 34 who say that they order a pizza from a c-store at least once a month. Further, more than a third of this consumer group (38%) also prefers to eat breakfast foods and preparations—such as pizza—that are traditionally associated with lunch and dinner.

Based in Irving, Texas, 7-Eleven operates, franchises or licenses more than 61,000 stores in 17 countries, including 10,900 in North America.
