Black Friday Free-for-All

Retailer promotions target biggest shopping day of the year
WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. -- Coffee here, E85 there, free pizza, too. Convenience-store retailers are offering as many Black Friday promotions as there are philosophies of holiday shopping. Here's a look at three:

Quick Chek, Whitehouse Station, N.J.

This Nov. 26, when holiday shoppers emerge from Thanksgiving meal-induced comas and endure freezing temperatures to scope out this season's hottest deals, Quick Chek, the family-operated chain of 125 c-stores throughout New Jersey and Southern New York, will offer bargain hunters complimentary cups of [image-nocss] Joe, saving them much-needed dough in the wake of welcoming the 'unofficial' start of the holiday shopping season.

Quick Chek's third annual "Joe to the World" free-coffee event will offer customers complimentary medium coffees beginning at midnight Friday, Nov. 26. The promotion will last for 24 hours.

"As a testament to our famed fresh coffee offering, along with our superior customer service, 'Joe to the World' is our way of thanking them for their continued patronage throughout the year," said Quick Chek vice president sales and marketing John Schaninger.

RaceTrac, Atlanta

Similarly, expects to pour up to 50,000 free cups of coffee on Friday as it offers free coffee from midnight to 10 a.m. Nov. 26 at its stores in Atlanta and Dallas.

"RaceTrac's Black Friday Coffee Giveaway is about rewarding those everyday adventurers willing to brave the crowds, cold and darkness to secure the must-have holiday items for their families and loved ones," said Allison Moran, senior vice president of the Atlanta-based chain. "Whether they come in pre-dawn for a caffeine boost or after the sales end to thaw out, we want shoppers to consider RaceTrac a Black Friday resource--right up there with their mailers and mobile phones."

Thorntons, Louisville, Ky.

This Black Friday, Nov. 26, Thorntons, which operates 165 gasoline/convenience stores, one travel plaza, and eight car washes, will sell e85 flex fuel for 85. per gallon from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at select locations in Kentucky and Indiana.

E-85 as an alternative fuel has experienced tremendous growth in the last 10 years, the company noted in a press release. The growth is due primarily to the fuel's many benefits as a renewable fuel that helps create a cleaner environment, boosts the U.S. economy and reduces oil imports.

"We are very excited about the expansion of E-85 fuel in our stores and are promoting its availability to raise consumer awareness on savings, as well as educating consumers on protecting our environment," said CEO Matt Thornton.

Casey's General Stores, Ankeny, Iowa

In a promotion tied to its social-media efforts, Casey's General Stores is providing a free breakfast pizza and coffee to its Facebook "friends" for use on Black Friday only.

Coupons for the deal are available for download only to Facebook users who "friend" the chain on the Casey's General Stores Facebook page.
