LAVAL, Quebec -- Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. is the latest convenience-store chain to promise a transition to cage-free eggs. The Laval, Quebec-based chain will make the switch in its corporate units over the next seven years.

The timeline considers the existing supply of cage-free eggs and the economic sustainability of the project, said Brian Hannasch, president and CEO of Couche-Tard.

"At Couche-Tard, we recognize a growing desire by consumers for a cage-free egg offer, which are sourced with animal welfare in mind," Hannasch said.

In 2016, the company announced it would transition its existing Statoil, Mac’s and Corner Store brands to the Circle K brand. Operating under one centralized brand has opened new procurement opportunities, like the move to cage-free eggs, for the chain.

Earlier this month, York, Pa.-based Rutter’s announced that it would use only cage-free eggs in all its stores starting in July. Back in 2016, 7-Eleven Inc., Irving, Texas, and Sheetz Inc., Altoona, Pa., both set goals to sell cage-free eggs by 2025.

In the U.S., Couche-Tard ranked No. 2 in CSP's 2017 Top 202 list of the largest c-store chains.
