Eye on In-Store Marketing, Pt. 2

Speedway and ampm play up supplier sweepstakes, foodservice, loyalty
SKOKIE, Ill. -- The In-Store Marketing Institute's recent look at how convenience store retailers are driving customer traffic uncovered several food and beverage promotions, as well as healthy use of supplier sweepstakes. Today, a look at Speedway SuperAmerica and ampm's marketing efforts.

SPEEDWAY SUPERAMERICA

Speedway SuperAmerica is hosting a sweepstakes from Mars Inc. that awards a trip to Miami and tickets to the National Football League's Super Bowl on Feb. 7, according to the In-Store Marketing Institute, Skokie, Ill. (The NFL is not involved in the sweeps.) [image-nocss] Entry is automatic with purchase of a king-size Snickers bar using a Speedy Rewards loyalty card. The sweeps runs Dec. 1 through 30.

Meanwhile, Speedway's website promotes a Speedy Rewards sweepstakes giving away a Vizio HDTV, Magellan Roadmate GPS and Apple iPod Touch to three grand-prize winners. To enter, cardholders must log on to their accounts and redeem 50 rewards points from Dec. 1 through 30.

The chain this month also is awarding cardholders 10 bonus points for every $1 spent on gift cards. Signage promotes the potential for 250 points with a $25 purchase.

Speedway SuperAmerica, Enon, Ohio, a subsidiary of Marathon Oil Corp., operates 1,534 stores in eight Midwest states and West Virginia.

BP/AMPM

BP's ampm chain continues to focus heavily on proprietary food, offering such deals as two-for-$2 burritos, two-for-99 cents doughnuts, and 79-cent hot dogs, corn dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Other recent "2-for" deals include PepsiCo and Red Bull products, the In-Store Marketing Institute reported.

The chain recently implemented a mobile coupon program that delivers up to three offers per month via text message to customers who register online or through a text. Participants show the message at the checkout to redeem.

Elsewhere, ampm continues to promote Coca-Cola Co.'s "Twist Txt" sweepstakes in stores and online. Launched May 1, the sweeps runs through Jan. 31, 2010.

Houston-based BP's ampm chain consists of 1,150 franchised stores in 11 states operating as part of BP- and Arco-branded gas stations (as of June).
