Maverik Commits to Healthier Food and Drink Options

As PHA partner, the retailer is the first c-store chain to pledge healthier beverages

SALT LAKE CITY -- Retailer Maverik Inc. has made a three-year commitment to the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA). The retailer is partnering with the nonprofit group to help expand access to healthier food options.

As part of Maverik’s support of PHA, which seeks to end childhood obesity within one generation, the c-store chain will provide healthier packaged and made-to-order options, stock affordable and health-forward items year-round and expand its selection of heathier beverages at the fountain and cooler case, making it the first c-store chain to commit to rethinking the cold vault.

Each summer, Maverik, which has the tagline Adventure's First Stop, will also contribute to PHA’s Drink Up marketing campaign, which encourages Americans to drink more water. It will donate 5 cents from every private-label bottle of water sold to the organization.

“Convenience stores are well known for delicious but less than healthy product offerings, but over the past several years Maverik has been introducing freshly made salads, wraps, fresh sandwiches and more as part of our effort to support customers who are looking for something healthier," said Ernie Harker, Maverik’s executive director of marketing. “Our commitment to PHA strengthens our efforts to promote an active, healthy lifestyle because adventures aren’t fun when you’re not healthy enough to enjoy them.”

Maverik is based in Salt Lake City. With more than 315 stores in 10 states, the chain ranked No. 28 in a year-end update of CSP’s2017 Top 202 list of the largest c-store chains in the United States.
