Subway Honors Jiffy Mart Unit Manager

Chain, S.C. Highway Patrol also honor employees who helped teen injured in collision

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Shawnee Blauvelt, the manager of the Subway located within a Jiffy Mart convenience store in Westminster, Md., has been named "Subway Manager of the Year of the Baltimore Region."

The Baltimore Region consists of more than 200 Subway stores. The award was selected and voted on by the area Subway board of Maryland. It was announced at the Subway sales rally at the BWI Hilton in Baltimore. The presentation was made by Nick Difatta, operations analyst at the Subway Development Corp. of Washington, D.C., on May 17, 2011 at Blauvelt's store.

Difatta [image-nocss] said that she was nominated based on her management qualities and follow through. He said, "Shawnee has worked on developing a strong team by training all staff using University of Subway Learning Ladder. She strives to know most, if not all of her customers on a first name basis and ensures every customer is acknowledged and greeted in a warm manner. She also spends a good deal of time visiting local businesses and other community organizations to explain about catering orders for meetings and large lunches."

In addition, Tom Moser, Jiffy Mart general manager, said "the Subway Management took into consideration the monthly store audits performed by Subway."

Each month, each Subway location is examined from top to bottom, looking at operational follow through, equipment condition, sanitization, cleanliness, customer service and food quality and consistency.

He said, "Shawnee and her team received high marks consistently each month."

Westminster, Md.-based Jiffy Mart is a division of Tevis Oil. There are four Jiffy Mart locations in Carroll County, Md., three of which offer Subway.

In other Subway news, Quentin Cagle and Ryan Sherwood are employees of a Subway restaurant in Spartanburg, S.C. They witnessed a collision outside their restaurant involving a minivan and an 18-wheeler, in which 15-year-old Paul Fouriezos had been ejected and partially trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.

While onlookers called 9-1-1, Quentin and Ryan responded immediately by running across four lanes of traffic without thinking of their own safety and lifted the minivan off the trapped teen, holding it in the air until paramedics arrived.

Paul broke his back and ankle in the accident, but his mother said he is recovering well.

As a result of their act, the South Carolina Highway Patrol recognized the two Subway employees as "Highway Patrol Heroes."

South Carolina Highway Patrol Colonel Kenny Lancaster Jr., who presented the award, "We think this is a miraculous and courageous act on the part of these two men. We are so grateful that they were in the right place at the right time because their actions likely saved this young man's life or reduced the extent of his injury. They are the true definition of a Highway Patrol Hero."

Paul could not attend the ceremony but sent a written statement by his mother and two sisters that read: "You stopped what you were doing, ran outside and selflessly gave me help that may have saved my life. In my opinion, that is the definition of heroism. Thank you for your courage to do the right thing."

The ceremony was also attended by Subway franchisee, Matt Banish; Subway Development Agent, Ali Saifi; Cherokee Springs, SC Fire Chief Trent Harper; and South Carolina State Rep. J. Derham Cole Jr., who also recognized the men for their courage.

Quentin and Ryan were also honored by a joint resolution recognizing their outstanding citizenship from the South Carolina House of Representatives.
