VERC 'Best Place to Work'

And Rutter's voted as having best milk, best quick-serve breakfast, lunch, dinner
DUXBURY, Mass. -- VERC Enterprises, a leading independent convenience store, gasoline station and car wash operation with 23 locations throughout eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire, has been honored as a 2011 "Best Places to Work" winner by The Boston Business Journal in recognition of its achievements in creating a positive work environment that attracts and retains employees through a combination of employee satisfaction, working conditions and company culture.

VERC Enterprises was one of more than 320 companies to qualify for consideration based on a two-stage [image-nocss] nomination process and the results of employee-satisfaction surveys taken throughout the month of April.

"We're honored to be a recipient of this prestigious award from the Boston Business Journal and proud that we have created the type of working environment that is worthy of our being named a best place to work," said Leo Vercollone, CEO of VERC Enterprises.

"Our Best Places to Work event recognizes the importance of cultivating a great workplace culture as a competitive advantage," said Chris McIntosh, publisher of the Business Journal. "Companies on our list can be justifiably proud of creating a high level of workplace satisfaction during an economy where traditional rewards like big raises and bonuses aren't as easy to give. In good times and in bad, our results validate how the creation of the right corporate culture can create powerful business advantages. Employees are proud to work for companies that are about more than just business."

Companies in three size categories--small (20-100 employees), midsize (101-500 employees) and large (more than 500 employees)--were evaluated on the results of more than 18,000 employee-satisfaction surveys. Employees answered questionnaires that addressed such factors as their pride in the company, company encouragement, support and recognition of achievement and relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

Separately, York, Pa.-based Rutter's topped several 2011 "Best of York" categories, as voted on by readers' of The York Daily Record, including best milk and best quick-serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Rutter's coffee finished second among voters in the "Best Coffee" category.

"Our customers have proven time and time again to be our greatest resource for tips and suggestions about our menu, " said Jerry Weiner, vice president of foodservice for Rutter's Farm Stores. "We read each suggestion that comes to us and implement change when possible. It's a beautiful thing to know that our customers voted us as the best in York because we try to be the best for our customers every day."

The one-of-a-kind additions to the menu at many of Rutter's stores in the last few years have given customers lots to love. Scrambled breakfast bowls, new appetizers and snacks like fried pickles and egg rolls as well as dinner choices like pot roast and mashed potatoes, spaghetti and meatballs and stir fry undoubtedly set Rutter's menu apart from the competition.

Menus vary from store to store, and customers can look up the menu options at each farm store using Rutter's mobile app or logging onto www.rutters.com.

Kiosk touch-screen ordering is available at many of the stores. The order system streamlines and simplifies the ordering process while providing an efficient method of order delivery to the restaurant staff.

Employees at Rutter's strive to "Take Four," which means to take four minutes or less to have any sandwich made to each customer's request.

Rutter's Farm Stores is a family-run enterprise with 90 years of commitment to providing exceptional customer service to customers in York, Adams, Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin and Lancaster counties.
