"Unfortunately, coffee costs around the world have been increasing at record levels throughout the year due to coffee crop shortages and other factors," the company said in a statement obtained by CSP Daily News. "And like all businesses, we are subject to the market conditions that ultimately [image-nocss] play a role in pricing."
"That said, our new prices still keep us price competitive," Wawa said. "We continue to enhance our offering with exciting new varieties through our World Brew program. World Brew brings exotic flavors to our customers on a seasonal basis. We are concluding the Mexican Blend offer and will feature Guatemalan variety soon. Our World Brew complements our nine varieties and our overall commitment to have the freshest coffee possible round the clock."
The company added, "We've always been committed to value pricing, and we plan to continue with great value-based promotions in the future."
Wawa spokesperson Lori Bruce told The Delaware County Daily Times the reason for the price hike was an increase in commodity prices, which have been occurring throughout the year.
"We've been trying to do the best we can to manage and hold off on this, but at this time, the increase went through," said Bruce.
Monday's price increase represents Wawa's second coffee price hike in less than a year, the report said; prices increased four cents in August 2010.
Separately, Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey's General Stores Inc. increased its coffee prices in February, CSP Daily News reported yesterday. "The average cost of coffee is up 49% compared to a year ago," CFO Bill Walljasper said.
