Spring Markets to Debut in 25 Former Walmart Express Stores

Brookshire Grocery launching new small-format brand

TYLER, Texas -- Brookshire Grocery Co. is acquiring 25 former Walmart Express stores, and the small-format grocery locations will open this summer as the company’s new Spring Market brand.

The acquisition is scheduled to close in July.

The locations range from southern Louisiana to west Texas and include Anson, Diana, DeKalb, Edgewood, Frankston, Godley, Grandview, Hughes Springs, Haskell, Italy, Kemp, Leonard, Lone Star, Maud, Merkel, Naples, Palmer, Waskom, Whitewright and Winters in Texas and Colfax, Iowa, Lake Arthur, Mamou and Zwolle in Louisiana.

In early 2016, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced that it would close its 102 approximately 12,000-square-foot Walmart Express locations among a total of 269 stores of various formats in the United States and globally as part of a strategic realignment.

The name “Spring Market” represents and honors Brookshire Grocery’s history, which began in 1928 with the opening of its first store on Spring Avenue in Tyler, Texas.

The stores will offer “hometown convenience in an easy-to-shop format with a surprising assortment of products at highly competitive prices,” the company said.

“Our Spring Market stores will stand for friendly service, quality products, affordable convenience and a pleasant shopping environment,” said chairman and CEO Brad Brookshire.

Some of the Walmart Express sites included gasoline pumps. It's not known if Brookshire will maintain a fuel offer.

Tyler-based Brookshire Grocery, established in 1928, operates 152 grocery stores in three states—Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas—under three brands, Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods and Fresh by Brookshire’s.
