Winning tickets for record $588 million Powerball jackpot sold in Missouri, Arizona

DEARBORN, Mo. & FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -- You didn't win. A Trex Mart convenience store in Dearborn, Mo., near Kansas City and a 4 Sons Food Store and Chevron gas station in Fountain Hills, Ariz., near Phoenix sold the two winning tickets for Wednesday's record Powerball jackpot of $587.5 million, according to lottery officials in both states.

The winners have not yet stepped forward to claim their prizes, which would be approximately $294 million per ticket.

The winners could split a cash payout of $384.7 million before taxes, or about $192 million per ticket. They have six months to claim their prize money.

Powerball, which is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, had not had a winner for two months.

"I think it's crazy, and I also think it's great," Bob Chebat, who manages the 4 Sons store, told the Associated Press. "I'm glad that all that work yesterday wasn't for nothing."

The store was swept up in a nationwide ticket-buying spree preceding Wednesday's drawing, with the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to buy a shot at the payout.

Clerks at 4 Sons sold 986 Powerball tickets Wednesday, which Chebat said was well above average.

Across the country, tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute--about six times the volume from a week ago.

The Missouri store will be awarded $50,000 for selling the winning ticket, while the Arizona store is due a $25,000 bonus.
