WILMINGTON, N.C. -- VPS Convenience Store Group and the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program have awarded $25,000 in grant funding to 50 schools throughout its southeast service area to support math and science education. The company worked closely with school officials to secure the grants, which are available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations.
"During times of budget cuts and limited outside funding, we are proud to be able to provide our local schools with this financial support," said Jeff Turpin, CEO of VPS Convenience Store Group. "It's important to make learning fun for the young people in the communities we serve, particularly in the fields of math and science."
For the past 11 years, VPS Convenience Store Group, which operates Scotchman, Lil Cricket and Young's Food Stores, has partnered with ExxonMobil to provide more than $125,000 in grant money to local schools. This year, VPS is giving a record-breaking $25,000 in grants to 50 schools throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
These grants are designed to make learning math and science fun and help schools purchase items supplemental learning tools such as science lab supplies, iPads, graphing calculators or to fund math and science related field trips. Funded by the Exxon Mobil Corp, the Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance is designed to provide retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through grants to neighborhood schools.
VPS, headquartered in Wilmington, N.C., operates under six brand names including Scotchman, Village Pantry, Lil Cricket, Young's, Next Door Stores and Everyday Shops. VPS offers fuel brands such as Exxon, Mobil, BP, Shell, Valero, Marathon and its own proprietary brand, Carolina Petro. The group has more than 3,200 employees.
