Exxon, Safeway End Gas Rewards Partnership

Program evaluation prompts "mutual" decision to discontinue

PLEASANTON, Calif. & IRVING, Texas -- Safeway Inc. and Exxon Mobil Corp. have ended their gasoline loyalty partnership program in the Mid-Atlantic about two-and-a-half years after launching it, according to a report by The Washington Business Journal.

Through the program, shoppers could redeem Safeway points at any participating Exxon or Mobil gas station, receiving 10 cents a gallon off the price for every $100 spent at a Safeway supermarket.

The partnership ended May 31, said the report.

"We continually evaluate each of our marketing programs and continue to focus on those that deliver increasingly attractive incentives and benefits to our distributors and consumers," ExxonMobil spokesperson Christian Flathman told CSP Daily News. "ExxonMobil made the decision to discontinue its participation in the Gas Rewards Program at Safeway, Randalls and Tom Thumb."

He added, "Safeway Club, Randalls Remarkable and Tom Thumb Reward card members could redeem Gas Reward points at participating Exxon- and Mobil-branded service stations through May 31, 2015."

Safeway still offers its Club Card members discounts on gasoline, but only at Safeway stores that have their own on-site gas stations, the newspaper said.

The end of the partnership, first launched in January 2013, was “a mutual parting of the ways,” Safeway spokesperson Craig Muckle told the Business Journal.

Safeway previously charged more for gas purchases made with a credit card, Muckle said. That practice has been eliminated, said the report, with the same price now for credit, debit or cash purchases at its gas stations.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway, which operates Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Carrs stores, is one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States with sales of $35.1 billion in 2013. The company operates 1,326 stores in 20 states and the District of Columbia, 13 distribution centers and 19 manufacturing plants.

Irving, Texas-based ExxonMobil, the largest publicly traded international oil and gas company, is the largest refiner and marketer of petroleum products.
