"Irving Cares is making a marked difference for our neighbors in need and it is an honor to award such a deserving recipient with the Chairman's Gift," Tillerson said today at a ceremony at Irving Cares. "We look forward [image-nocss] to continuing our partnership with Irving Cares as they help residents during the holiday season and beyond."
Irving Cares provides a food pantry, emergency assistance with rent, utilities and prescriptions, and transportation to medical facilities for Irving residents experiencing financial hardship. Due to the economic decline, client requests at Irving Cares have increased at least 20% in every program as families struggle with reduced wages and unemployment.
Tillerson toured the facilities with Teddie Story, executive director of Irving Cares, and had a chance to visit case worker's offices, which were painted by a group of ExxonMobil employees during the annual 2009 United Way Day of Caring in September.
"With the holidays in full swing and 2010 just around the corner, ExxonMobil's investment in our organization is greatly appreciated," said Story. "We work to provide the residents of Irving a safe place to receive financial and employment assistance and a variety of other services. With this generous gift, we will be starting the new year off on a positive note."
Tillerson established the Chairman's Gift in 2006 to provide a local nonprofit organization with a donation during the holiday season. Since the gift's inception, Tillerson has selected St. Philip's School and Community Center, Lena Pope Home, Vogel Alcove and Irving Cares as recipients.
In addition to its selection as this year's Chairman's Gift recipient, Irving Cares has been previously supported by ExxonMobil and its employees through United Way Day of Caring projects and the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program, which places college interns with qualifying nonprofit organizations each summer.In 2008, together with its employees and retirees, ExxonMobil, its divisions and affiliates and ExxonMobil Foundation provided $225 million in contributions worldwide, of which more than $89 million was dedicated to education.
