Florida association president, CEO has resigned

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association (FPMA) said late yesterday that it has accepted the resignation of its president and CEO, Jim Smith.

A member of the FPMA Hall of Fame, Smith has been active in the association as both a marketer member and its chief executive for more than 30 years, the association said.

Smith was inducted in the Hall of Famehonoring individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to both the petroleum industry in Florida and to FPMA, and who promote a positive image of Florida's [image-nocss] petroleum industry to the general public through increased awareness and educationin 1996.

"Jim has been one of the strongest advocates for the wholesale petroleum industry throughout Florida and on the national stage. His leadership and invaluable contributions as a member of our board of directors and CEO are greatly appreciated and will be hard to replicate," said Ed Hinson, chairman of the organization, in a statement announcing Smith's departure.

"On behalf of the entire membership, we wish him well with his future endeavors," Hinson added.

Tallahassee, Fla.-based FPMA represents the majority of the Sunshine State's approximately 9,600 gas stations, about 5,300 of which are independently owned or run by small retail chains.
