HOUSTON -- Car wash equipment maker Jim Coleman Co. has donated $3,035 through its Wash Blasts to children affected by Hurricane Katrina. The money it collected was given to Gideon Math & Reading Center in Galveston, Texas. Gideon assists students with tutoring, homework, mastering math and reading skills and preparing them for state exams.
This donation will be divided into scholarships. All eight of the local elementary schools on the island will be contacted for recommendations, thus spreading the donation to every public elementary school in Galveston.
Once the recipients [image-nocss] are selected, the students and their parents will visit the center for an assessment and orientation and then begin the program. With the donations, the children will be able to remain enrolled in the program for at least the remainder of the school year.
The Houston-based company also collected backpacks, and the effort assisted schools in the Houston; Goose Creek in Baytown; schools in San Antonio; schools in Baton Rouge; and now schools in Galveston.
