The large check was presented during a ceremony in which Reid Menzer's father, Eric Menzer, and best friend, Matt Devlin, spoke about the event. "Without help from donations like this, the park would not be able to be maintained and serve its overall goal of being a safe place for people to skate," said Eric Menzer.
The total donation was a result of Tom's taking 25 [image-nocss] cents per Big Fizz and Tom's Java sold and putting into a fund for the Reid Menzer Memorial Skate Park. The promotion began June 1, 2009 and ended September 4, 2009 at all Tom's locations in the Central Pennsylvania area. Tom's also had donation boxes at the counter to allow for additional donations.
In addition to Tom's Convenience Stores, there were many other sponsors present including: Shipley Green Team, Yowza Water, Alternative Skate Shop, Exist Skate Shop, Shoppe Revival, One Skateboards, Pirate Skateboards, Built to Last Tattoos, Regrind, Migration Skatepark, Funtastik, Drama Skateboards, Skatology Skate Shop, Interstate Magazine, Juice Magazine, Campbell's Music, Keystone Skateboards and Eric Forberger Photography.
After being struck by a car while street luging, 14 year old Reid Menzer passed away. In his honor, the Reid Menzer Memorial Skate Park was built in York in 2008. Since his death, more than $390,000 has been raised for the skate park.
Tom's Convenience Stores are located throughout southern Pennsylvania. The chain is a unit of the Shipley Group, based in York.
