ATLANTA -- Atlanta motorists will soon be getting some free advice along with their fillup at area gas stations. Some 30 stations around the cityincluding Exxon, Chevron, Texaco and Shell locationshave posted the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) new Too Hot for Spot public service announcement on all of their fuel pumps. The poster (pictured) features a drawing of a panting pooch locked in a car, with the tagline In Hot Weather, Leave Dogs at Home.
PETA wants to remind dog owners that cars heat up quickly, even on [image-nocss] mild days.
If a person sees a dog in distress in a car, PETA recommends taking down the car's color, make, model and license-plate number, and having the owner paged inside nearby stores. If the dog's life appears to be in imminent danger, they are urged to call local humane authorities or the police.
Your dog may want to come along on summertime car rides, but if you're planning on making even a quick stop at a convenience store, it's best to leave your dog at home, said PETA Director Daphna Nachminovitch. On hot days, even a sunny yard without access to shade can be fatal. A comfortable, air-conditioned home is the safest place for your dog when temperatures start to rise.
