Amazon Snack Sales Climb 42% in 2017
By Abbey Lewis on Sep. 15, 2017SEATTLE -- Sales of snacks and candy on Amazon.com are up 42% so far this year, according to research from One Click Retail, Sandy, Utah.
In the first eight months of 2017, sales of snacks grew to $215 million. In all of 2016, Amazon sold $240 million in snacks and candy.
Here's a look at the five best-selling snack and candy product types so far this year on Amazon.com ...
1. Chocolate
With just more than $30 million in sales, chocolate is the top-selling snack and candy item on Amazon.com in the first eight months of 2017, according to One Click Retail.
A convenience-store-friendly example comes from Mars. The latest addition to Dove’s dark-chocolate lineup is Peanut Butter & Dark Chocolate Promises, a blend of smooth Dove dark chocolate and peanut-butter cream. The variety is available in 7.94-ounce laydown bags for a suggested-retail-price (SRP) range of $4.09-$4.79.
2. Chips
With more than $30 million in sales, chips are the second-best-selling product type on Amazon.com.
Helping inspire sales and new to c-stores, this example from Doritos is called Blazin’ Buffalo Explosion Mix. The new product features chips in different shapes and flavors, including Chipotle, Cool Ranch, Blue Cheese and Blazin’ Buffalo & Ranch. The mix comes in 9.5-ounce bags for an SRP of $4.29. As part of the rollout, consumers who buy specially marked bags can participate in the “Call the Play” contest with Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Fans who correctly guess what play Stafford calls have a chance to win prizes.
3. Nonchocolate candy
Earning more than $25 million, nonchocolate candy is the third-highest seller in the candy and snacks category on Amazon.com.
This c-store example is called Juicy Chews and comes from Lovely Candy Co. These fruit chews are made with real fruit and no artificial colors or flavors. The individually wrapped chews come in Original (cherry, apple and blueberry) and Tropical (pineapple, mango and passion fruit) mixes. They are vegan and certified gluten-free and non-GMO. They are available for an SRP of $4.99.
4. Jerky
Meat snacks earned more than $15 million in sales on Amazon.com and are the fourth-best-selling snack on the site.
This new product available in c-stores comes from Think Jerky. This new flavor was created by restaurateur Doug Sohn, who established Hot Doug’s and is also known as the Sausage King of Chicago. The Classic flavor pays homage to the original flavor of beef jerky, the company said. It combines savory beef with a hint of black pepper. The jerky is 100% grass-fed, gluten-free, paleo friendly and contains no antibiotics, nitrites or added hormones.
5. Cookies
At almost $15 million in sales, cookies are the fifth-best-selling product type on Amazon.com.
This c-store example from Amplify Snack Brands is called Oatmega. This line of grass-fed whey protein bars in a cookie form are made with grass-fed whey, a protein that comes from New Zealand cows that are pasture-raised without antibiotics. Each cookie contains 12 to 13 grams of protein and is certified gluten-free and non-GMO. The cookies come in three flavors: Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter and White Chocolate Macadamia.
