BEND, Ore. -- Following suit with Treat Right, the voluntary system developed by the National Confectioners Association (NCA), American Licorice Co. has announced it will be adopting front-of-pack (FOP) calorie information, with retail shipments expected to have new packaging by this fall.
In an industrywide effort to provide consumers with useful information when making purchasing decisions, the NCA has created a system designed to meet the specific and unique needs of the confectionery industry while providing as much consistency as possible with other domestic and international FOP schemes.
"With Treat Right, the NCA has taken a crucial step towards ensuring consistency in labeling across the entire confectionery industry," said Paul Barron, senior marketing development manager at American Licorice Co. "Ultimately, we feel that providing the nutritional information on pack will benefit our consumers by enabling them to enjoy candy in moderation without feeling the need to give it up."
The American Licorice FOP icon will be a green rounded rectangular tablet/plaque shape with black text. The size of the icon depends on the size of the principal display panel (PDP) of the confectionery package. American Licorice will position the callout on the PDP to ensure the consumer can view the icon under normal conditions of retail display. Information on the calorie, total fat, saturated fat and sugar grams will be visible on the back panel.
American Licorice has committed to have retail shipments of packaging with the FOP calorie callout starting in the fall of 2013. The goal is to be on-shelf on all products in the first quarter of 2014.
An industry leader in manufacturing and marketing candy products since 1914, American Licorice is one of the original licorice manufacturers in the U.S. candy industry. Its brands include Red Vines, Snaps, Sour Punch, Punchies and Super Ropes.
