Hershey Tackles the Meat Bar

Second major supplier to jump into new snack segment

HERSHEY,  Pa. -- Hershey Co. will join the push toward meat bars, joining General Mills and other manufacturers that have latched on to the merging of the convenience bar segment and the growing interest in protein.

Epic Bar meat bar

This summer, Hershey's Krave Pure Foods business unit will introduce the meat-bar line in flavors as varied as Black Cherry Barbecue, Basil Citrus and Pineapple orange.

“It’s a snack bar format to be merchandised in that set,” Shane Chambers, general manager of Krave, told Food Business News. “It is a very low-calorie, high-protein choice, and we are doing it in a different way. It is all natural, has no preservatives, and features additional ingredients like fruit and ancient grains, like quinoa.”

Other recent entries into the new meat-bar segment include General Mills' Epic Bar, Brick Bars, Kratos High Protein Beef Bars and Tanka Bars.
