The Last Twinkie?

C-stores lose out to supermarket chain for "final delivery"

ITASCA, Ill. -- Jewel-Osco, a leading Midwestern supermarket retailer, is giving Twinkie lovers a chance to get one final taste of the iconic Hostess Brands treat. This week, the retailer will receive what is it said is the final official shipment of Twinkies in the country.

More than 20,000 boxes of Twinkies will be available starting Tuesday morning, Dec. 11, at select Chicago-area Jewel-Osco stores. The shipment will also include Ding Dongs, Zingers and Orange Cupcakes.

The Hostess products will be sold at regular price, while supplies last. There will be no limit on how many items a customer can buy, the retailer said.

In mid-November, Irving, Texas-based snack cake maker Hostess Brands Inc. shut down and began the process of liquidating its assets after the baker's union strike "affected [its] ability to continue to make products and service [its] customers' needs and pushed Hostess Brands into a wind down scenario," it said. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers & Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) blamed the company's demise on "mismanagement."

Some retailers have experienced consumer runs on Hostess products, which have been disappearing from store shelves since the announcement.
