Multiple Snack Brands Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

Bacteria traced in common whey-powder ingredient

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Mondelez International, Pepperidge Farm and Flowers Foods have all announced recalls of certain products due to the possible presence of salmonella in the whey powder used to make those products.

Mondelez

On July 21, Mondelez International Inc. issued a recall on various Ritz Crackers products due to potential traces of salmonella in the snacks’ whey-powder ingredient. This follows a public health alert issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture warning consumers of the ingredient, which was first recalled by a Mondelez supplier on July 17.

More than a dozen Ritz products, in various package sizes, have been removed from shelves in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The products include:

  • Ritz Bits Cheese
  • Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches
  • Ritz Bacon Cracker Sandwiches With Cheese
  • Ritz Whole Wheat Cracker Sandwiches With White Cheddar Cheese
  • Ritz Everything Cracker Sandwiches With Cream
  • Mixed Cookie Cracker Variety

The recall is solely precautionary as no complaints or illnesses have been reported, Mondelez said.

Deerfield, Ill.-based Mondelez manufactures biscuits, chocolate, gum, candy and powdered beverages. Besides Ritz, its products include Sour Patch Kids, belVita and Chips Ahoy.

Pepperidge Farm

On July 23, Pepperidge Farm Inc. issued a recall on four varieties—in multiple package sizes—of Goldfish crackers in the United States because of the same whey-powder contamination. The company’s recall is also precautionary, and no illnesses have been reported.

The recalled Goldfish mixtures include:

  • Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar
  • Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion
  • Goldfish Baked With Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar
  • Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel

Norwalk, Conn.-based Pepperidge Farm produces Goldfish crackers and various buns, bread rolls, cookies and desserts. The company has been owned by Camden, N.J.-based Campbell Soup Co. since 1961.

Flowers Foods

On July 18, Flowers Foods Inc. issued a recall of its Swiss Rolls due to the potential for whey-powder contamination. The precautionary recall includes Swiss Rolls sold under the Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square and Great Value brand names. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled items. Consumers are eligible for a full refund if they return a contaminated product, the company said.

Thomasville, Ga.-based Flowers Foods produces packaged bakery foods. Its brands also include Nature’s Own, Dave’s Killer Bread and Cobblestone Bread Co.
