New Doritos Bags Come With a Soundtrack

Limited-edition packaging features built-in music player, playlist

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Doritos is offering customers a snacking experience with a soundtrack.

The brand has partnered with Marvel Studios to promote the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” with Doritos bags that feature a built-in music player loaded with the film’s soundtrack, Billboard reported.

People can plug headphones directly into the player, which resembles an old-school cassette-tape deck, and rock out to hits from the ’60s and ’70s, such as Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” and Cheap Trick’s “Surrender.” The bags can even be recharged.

The limited-edition bags will be available for purchase starting April 28 at Amazon.com/doritos. On May 5, the film’s release date, Doritos will host pop-up recording booths in New York and Los Angeles, where fans can sing a song from the soundtrack and win prizes.

This is not Doritos' first foray into the music world. The brand had a stage at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, featuring a 62-foot vending machine to promote its “Bold” campaign. It also rolled out what it said was the world’s largest arcade game, combining music and gaming, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in 2016.

“ 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' was yet another way for us to take an amazing musical pop culture hit and elevate the experience,” Ryan Matiyow, senior director of marketing for PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America, told Billboard. “Can you imagine a better way to listen to this soundtrack than with a bag of Doritos? We couldn’t either.”
