Snacking and the Art of Pretzel-Eating

New survey reveals secrets behind how Americans like their pretzels

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. -- Apparently there's no one way to eat a pretzel, although the majority of Americans eat the curves first, knot last.

A new survey from SuperPretzel, launched in honor of National Pretzel Day, which takes place April 26, found that two-thirds of all respondents eat the curves first. Topping preference is a bit more diverse. Twenty-eight percent of respondents prefer cheese on their soft pretzels, while 17% like mustard or chocolate. Only 13% like to eat their pretzels plain, and 2% like to dip or top the snack with something like cinnamon, icing, peanut butter or marinara sauce. Men are more likely than women to prefer chocolate on their pretzels.

"Regardless of how people choose to eat their soft pretzels, one thing is for sure, they can't get enough of this snacking staple," said Alissa Davis, vice president of marketing for J&J Snack Foods Corp., the maker of SuperPretzel.

The survey, which was conducted among 2,012 adults, indicates that 69% of pretzel consumers prefer to dip, and 31% prefer their pretzels topped. One interesting factoid from the survey: Respondents who do "bendy exercises" like yoga, Pilates, gymnastics and dance are more likely to be a bit more adventurous with flavors and toppings.
