Stewart's Offering Free Philly Vanilla Cones

Giveaway honors memory of Phyllis "Philly" Dake

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Stewart's Shops is remembering Phyllis "Philly" Dake by giving away free ice cream cones on June 8. The free single-scoop Philly Vanilla cones will be available from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 p.m. Friday at all 328 Stewart's Shops, limit one per customer.

Dake, 85, philanthropist and wife of Charles S. Dake, who together ran Saratoga Dairy and what is now the Stewart Shops convenience store chain, died peacefully at her home in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., after a battle with Huntington's Disease (see Related Content below for previous CSP Daily News coverage).

Philly Vanilla--pure vanilla ice cream speckled with crushed vanilla beans--was named after her.

"Philly had a positive attitude that was contagious, and the ability to look at life through other people's point of view," the company said. "That ability may have been the motivation for the Make Your Own Sundae. She knew that people would enjoy an ice cream sundae even more if they made it the way they wanted it. She was right, and a Stewart's signature dish was created."

The readers of The Albany Times-Union recently voted Stewart's ice cream the No. 1 ice cream in the Capital Region for 2012.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-based Stewart's Shops is an employee- and family-owned convenience store chain. It is known for milk, ice cream, coffee, food to go, gasoline and more. Stewart's Shops are located in more than 30 counties across upstate New York and southern Vermont.
