Casey's Bridge Mix, 6.5-oz. bags UPC 98437 12003; "Best Before" codes dates 090909 and 093009. Casey's Peanut Clusters, 7-oz. bags UPC 98437 12001; "Best Before" codes dates 051609, 051709 and 051909. Casey's Salted Peanuts, 5-oz. bags UPC 98437 21002; "Best Before" codes dates 121108 and 011009. This product is unlikely to be found on the store shelf as it is already older and out of code; nevertheless, on the chance that there could be any product left over or at a home, the company believed that a notice and recall was the appropriate step to take. Casey's Santa Fe Trail Mix, 6.5-oz. bags UPC 98437 21001; "Best Before" codes dates of 012309 and 020809. Casey's Trail Mix, 6.5-oz. bags UPC 98437-21000; "Best Before" codes dates of 020809. Casey's General Stores initiated the voluntary recalls because this product used peanuts sourced from Peanut Corp. of America (PCA). PCA's expanded recall now includes all peanuts and peanut-related products from PCA's Plainview, Texas, plant from January 2007 to present. This notification is separate from the recall issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for PCA's Blakely, Ga., plant. Lynchburg, Va.-based PCA filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in mid-February.
The FDA is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella targeted at PCA's Blakely plant. The nationwide outbreak has sickened approximately 600 people and may have been responsible for the deaths of at least nine people.
Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey's General Stores said it has not received any consumer illness complaints associated with its products; however, it is taking precautionary steps, including removing the impacted products from retail store shelves and the entire distribution system. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are being told that they should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
Other retailers that have officially announced recalls include Cumberland Farms and Stewart's Shops.
