Yoplait's New Yogurt: 'Smarter, Not Sweeter'

Product’s eight flavors made with ultrafiltered milk

MINNEAPOLIS -- General Mills' Yoplait has added a new brand to its line of yogurt products. YQ by Yoplait will arrive at retailers nationwide in late June. The item has a suggested retail price of $1.49 for 5.3-ounce cups and $4.99 for 26-ounce tubs.

YQ by Yoplait is made with ultrafiltered milk, a type of milk that’s filtered to concentrate protein and remove sugar and lactose. After filtering, the milk is put through a churning process that ultimately creates the yogurt consistency without the tartness or chalky aftertaste of Greek-style yogurts, the company said. Other ingredients include cane sugar and natural fruit.

The yogurt comes in eight flavors: Plain, Strawberry, Blueberry, Vanilla, Lime, Mango, Peach and Coconut. Each 5.3-ounce cup contains 9 grams of sugar and 15 grams of protein. It is gluten-free, 99% lactose-free and contains no artificial preservatives, artificial flavors or artificial colors. Yoplait has branded the product as “smarter, not sweeter” to entice today’s health-driven consumers.

“We talked to thousands of people to really understand what they were missing from the yogurt aisle,” said Doug Martin, vice president of marketing for Yoplait USA. “We heard loud and clear the need for a smart snack option, something made with simple ingredients, less sugar and higher protein.

“What we've been able to accomplish with YQ by Yoplait delivers on this desire," he continued. "Through our use of simple ingredients, ultrafiltered milk and active cultures, we've created a protein-packed, less sweet flavor profile with a thick, smooth, extra-creamy texture. It's unlike anything that exists in the yogurt aisle today.”

Yoplait is a leading yogurt manufacturer that was founded by two French farmers in 1965. The company was acquired by General Mills in March 2011.

Minneapolis-based General Mills is a foodservice company found in more than 100 countries worldwide. Besides Yoplait, its brands include Cheerios, Annie’s, Yoplait, Nature Valley, Fiber One, Haagen-Dazs, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Old El Paso, Wanchai Ferry and Yoki.
