FDA Reaches Out to Retailers

Center for Tobacco Products to hold five free live training sessions
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) will hold the first of five live retailer training sessions on the regulations restricting the sale and distribution of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to children and adolescents in order to provide retailers with training and an opportunity to ask questions on this new regulation. The training sessions will be held at five venues across the country, starting with the Northeast.

Retailers in neighboring areas and states are encouraged [image-nocss] to register and attend, either in-person, via phone or webcast at the most convenient location. There is no charge to attend these training sessions. Beginning July 19, 2010, FDA will hold the first of five, live training sessions on federal tobacco regulations to provide retailers with training and an opportunity to ask questions about the regulations.

Retailers are encouraged to attend in-person or participate by phone or by webcast.

Training sessions will be held in Boston (July 19), Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles (dates to be announced).

Retailers who cannot attend in person can participate through the live webcast of the session or can call in for an audio-only version of the session. Retailers participating by webcast or phone will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Information on how to view or listen to the training session by web or phone will be available five days prior toeach event on this web page. Please note that there is a limit to how many people can participate by web or phone. Access will be on a first come, first served basis. There is no preregistration to view by web or phone. Because of space limitations, retailers interested in attending in person are asked to preregister. Preregistration will close three business days prior to the event or earlier if capacity is reached. Onsite registration the day of the training will be available only on a space-available basis beginning 30 minutes prior to the start time.

To preregister, email the following information to Sandrol@aplusgov.com: Full name, title, address, contact phone, contact email, affiliation (please indicate: retailer, distributor, industry, state/local government, press, other), location and date of training. All received preregistrations will be confirmed by return email. To preregister by phone, call Shelley Androl at (888) 332-4473 and provide all of the information noted above.

Materials for the sessions will be posted on our website prior to the event. Instructions on how to obtain a transcript will be posted on our website 30 days after the event.

The FDA will provide training on topics including who is subject to the regulation; what tobacco products are regulated; prohibition of sale and distribution of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to persons younger then 18 years of age; self-service displays and vending machines; minimum cigarette and smokeless tobacco package sizes; prohibition of free samples of cigarettes; coupons; sponsorships; nontobacco gift or items; flavored cigarettes; and "light, low and mild" cigarettes, as well as a question-and-answer session.
