Many gas stations have evolved to sell packaged foods and ultimately became c-stores that sell gas. Many of those will become a food retailer first that also sells gas. But if you’re among the readers who cringe at the idea of retailing anything with a shelf life shorter than a candy bar, there’s another direction: becoming a professional car wash first that also sells gas.

The ways to trigger more impulse sales are as varied as the categories themselves. But the stakes for retailers are only growing, as declining fuel sales keep more customers off the convenience-store lot and competition from other channels mounts.

As if manufacturers of ribbon and wrapping paper hadn’t already been marginalized by gift cards, here comes digital gifting. Just send that card electronically with a click of a mouse. Forget about even the sleeve that stores the gift card.
