bp opened two ampm stores in Atlanta on Wednesday, its first in the state of Georgia as the convenience-store chain pushes further southeast.

Both Atlanta locations previously sold bp’s fuels, but now they will also feature ampm’s stores, regional food offerings and bp’s private-label brand, epic goods.

bp plans to open additional ampm stores in Atlanta. The success of its first locations will determine the potential for further expansion in that region and to others.

“We’re taking advantage of our broad fuel-marketer network to introduce ampm’s unique brand to new U.S. regions,” said Greg Franks, bp’s senior vice president of mobility and convenience for the Americas. “Atlanta marks an exciting new wave of growth for us, for the guests we’re eager to serve and for our branded fuel marketers looking to expand their portfolios.”

La Palma, California-based ampm’s expansion to Atlanta aligns with bp’s recent strategy reset, which includes driving increased cash flow and strong returns through focused growth from its most advantaged and integrated businesses, according to the company. As part of that effort, the company is looking to grow its convenience footprint across the United States.

“We’re thrilled to bring our signature ampm convenience offerings to Atlanta, a city as thriving and dynamic as the brand itself,” said Franks. “We are committed to making every visit something our guests look forward to while giving our fuel marketers a competitive edge.”

Founded in southern California in 1978, the chain now consists of more than 1,000 stores and completes more than 160 million customer transactions annually.

The brand last expanded beyond its west coast roots in 2022, opening four stores at bp-owned gas stations in New York. These stores were the incubators for testing branding elements, regionalizing offers and testing innovation and digital solutions, the company said. With those sites established, bp turned its sights south.

ampm previously had an Atlanta presence between 2007 and 2012.

“We’re excited to bring ampm back to Atlanta with our valued bp and Amoco marketers,” said Lisa Blalock, vice president of U.S. convenience and mobility at bp.

Global energy company bp, which has U.S. headquarters in Chicago, owns TravelCenters of America and convenience-store brands ampm and Thorntons in the United States.
