Applegreen is nearly finished with its $450 million project to upgrade and modernize all 27 service areas on the New York State Thruway.

Each travel plaza will have an Applegreen convenience store and a range of branded food and coffee outlets, all operated by Applegreen. As of July 25, 18 of the plazas have already been completed and the remainder are due to be finished in the first quarter of 2025, an Applegreen spokesperson told CSP Daily News.

Twenty-three locations will have new buildings, and at four locations, the existing buildings are being entirely refurbished. The size of the travel plazas on the Thruway ranges from 3,896 square feet to 20, 145 square feet.

  • Applegreen PLC is No. 32 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets.

The upgrades will bring new amenities like outdoor pet walking areas, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, nursing stations and farmers’ market locations. Through the TasteNY program, each new Applegreen c-store showcases 28 local New York food and beverage vendors.

The project is funded by Applegreen and its partners and does not rely on either toll funds or U.S. tax dollars, the spokesperson said. Applegreen is working with the New York State Thruway Authority to redevelop the plazas on a phased basis to minimize the impact on travelers. Gasoline was available at all service areas during construction.

In New Jersey, Applegreen is close to completing a $250 million program to rebuild or renovate all the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway service areas. The Clara Barton travel plaza was scheduled to open the week of July 22, and the final site will be completed in August when the James Gandolfini location opens.

Applegreen has 300-plus branded food outlets and almost 100 travel plazas across nine states. Irish convenience-store retailer Applegreen, the holding company of Petrogas Group U.S. Inc., Plainview, New York, made its U.S. debut in 2014 after opening its first sites in New York state. It made its Top 202 debut in 2019 after a series of acquisitions increased its store count. The U.S. business includes sites in the North, Midwest and Southeast under the Shell, Exxon, Mobil, Sunoco, bp, Chevron, Holiday, Freedom and Speedway fuel brands.
