C-Store Community Service Roundup: Golf, Gardens & Scholarships

Initiatives by Circle K, Couche-Tard, Kum & Go, Speedway, Stripes, Thorntons

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- Whatever form it takes, whether they are giving to hospitals and schools, helping to raise funds and awareness, offering scholarships or playing golf for a good cause, convenience-store chains do not hesitate to help their communities.

Circle K Step Up for Students

Here are a few of the many recent examples:

Circle K. Circle K, part of Alimentation Couche-Tard, is donating $2 million to Step Up For Students. This is Circle K’s first donation to the nonprofit organization that helps administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, which is funded by corporations with tax obligations to the state in exchange for dollar-for-dollar tax credits. Circle K’s donation will fund about 350 K-12 scholarships.

Couche-Tard. Couche-Tard convenience stores in Quebec will participate in Minute Maid Breakfast Day, a new initiative to raise awareness about the importance of a balanced breakfast, the number of Canadian students at risk of going to school hungry, and how Breakfast Club of Canada helps students succeed.

From September 23 to October 27, Laval, Quebec-based Couche-Tard will donate $1 from the purchase of any 450-ml Minute Maid or Five Alive beverage to Breakfast Club of Canada.

Kum & Go. Throughout October, associates of West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go will encourage customers to add $1 with each transaction to be donated to United Way of Central Iowa’s annual campaign. About 50 stores in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties will participate.

In addition to the in-store campaign, associates at the Store Support Center headquarters from Kum & Go, Solar Transport and Des Moines Menace Soccer will participate in activities that will raise money the last week of the month, along with pledges for ongoing support via paycheck contributions.

Speedway. Enon, Ohio-based Speedway’s 24th annual Miracle Celebration & Golf Tournament in Dayton, Ohio, raised more than $2 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This record-breaking amount will support 19 hospitals.

Stripes Convenience Stores. Corpus Christi, Texas-based Stripes Convenience Stores will present a $500 grant check to Smith Elementary School in Corpus Christi as part of the Stripes Fresh Learning Garden Seeded by Laredo Taco Co. program.

The program gives students a hands-on experience to understand where food comes from and learn the value of using fresh foods. At 10:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, Smith elementary students will plant seeds and starter vegetable kits in newly constructed garden beds as part of the check presentation.

Thorntons. Throughout October, The Louisville, Ky.-based Thorntons will donate proceeds from its pink coffee cups and reusable pink mugs to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer awareness and research. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
