In June, Lisa N’Chonon was named chief financial officer and treasurer of EG America, a 1,578-store convenience-store chain based in Westborough, Massachusetts.
EG America is No. 5 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 U.S. c-store chains by store count.
After a 20-year career in accounting and controlling, N’Chonon became the director of financial reporting at Cumberland Farms in 2017, before EG America acquired Cumberland Farms in 2019.
Her involvement in the transition of all the accounting, finance and back-office functions for EG’s stores after the acquisition helped refine her skills. N’Chonon also assisted in growing the finance team by more than two-thirds in 2020.
“I was very involved in building that team, almost from the bottom-up,” she said. “We switched auditors. I was the primary through a lot of that transition and just ensured all the key finance processes and all that were in play.”
Then, in 2023, N’Chonon accepted the interim CFO and treasurer role after Caroline Taitelbaum took on the interim president role.
“I felt like it was pretty easy to slide into the interim CFO role because I knew so much of everything,” she said.
N’Chonon aims to gain a better understanding of the company’s operations and the overall financial position across the U.S., she said.
“I've really been working to align our resources to support all of our growth initiatives, make sure we're prioritizing investments the right way and just fostering a performance culture across the company,” she said.
EG America has been on a streak of hiring and promotion women recently. The company has named Laura Sherman, who has been with the company since 2013, general counsel; Diana Styles as chief human resources officer; Whitney Johnson as senior vice president of marketing; Mendy Meriwether as vice president of food, dispensed beverage and quick-service restaurants (QSRs); and Elizabeth Pierce as chief operating officer.
“It's not just about diversity for the sake of it,” N’Chonon said. “It's about recognizing the talent that we have, making sure everyone has a voice at the table. It's been really exciting that I can see the changes that the other women and leadership are bringing. It's fresh perspective, innovative ideas and just a level of collaboration that helps shape the culture in such a positive way.”
EG Group established itself in the United States in 2018 as EG America by acquiring Kroger’s 762-site c-store network, which included the Turkey Hill, Loaf 'N Jug, Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb and Quik Stop banners. It acquired TravelCenters of America’s portfolio of 225 Minit Mart c-stores in 2018. And in 2019, among other acquisitions, EG Group acquired Cumberland Farms and its nearly 660 c-stores in the Northeast and Florida. Other acquired brands include Certified Oil, Fastrac and Sprint Food Stores.
