Dollar General to Open 625 New Stores in 2012

Discount retailer expanding to California, Massachusetts

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -- Dollar General Corp. said that it plans to open 625 new stores and add more than 6,000 new jobs in 2012. These new stores and jobs will be spread among Dollar General's existing 38-state operating area, plus new markets of California and Massachusetts, creating a coast-to-coast presence for the first time.

Dollar General operates more retail stores than any retailer, with nearly 10,000 stores.

"Dollar General is excited about our tremendous opportunity for growth in existing markets as well as in new markets such as California and Massachusetts," said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General's chairman and CEO. "We believe the new communities and states we are entering will benefit from our stores' convenience and value, as well as the jobs and commitment to community our stores bring."

The projected jobs follow on the heels of three years of positive job growth for the company, it said. Including 2012, the company will have created more than 21,000 new jobs since 2009.

Dollar General plans to serve California shoppers with stores in suburban, rural and metropolitan communities.

In addition to the new stores, the company plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores and open a distribution center in California

"California presents an extraordinary opportunity for Dollar General to fulfill its mission of serving others by delivering convenience and value," Dreiling said. "Our plans bring new opportunities for Californians, including hundreds of new jobs. For those seeking to grow with a fast-paced Fortune 200 company, Dollar General is the place to be. We look forward to being a part of this great state and adding Californians to the Dollar General family."

The discount retailer has job opportunities available at all levels, including retail, field, distribution center management and general warehouse positions. More hiring is expected as Dollar General expands in California.

Dollar General built its success by focusing on delivering everyday household needs, food and basic apparel in convenient, neighborhood-size stores, it said. Dollar General offers products that are frequently used and replenished, such as food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, house wares and seasonal items at low everyday prices. In addition to private brands, Dollar General sells products from manufacturers such as Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Kellogg's, General Mills, Nabisco, Hanes, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.
